The Tara River Canyon, known worldwide as the "Tear of Europe", is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena on the planet. With its maximum depth of 1300 meters, it ranks first in Europe and second in the world, right behind the famous Grand Canyon in the United States of America.
This fascinating notch, which the Tara River carved through massive limestone rocks over millions of years, stretches for almost 80 kilometers, forming the border between the plateau and the mountain massifs of northern Montenegro. Within its walls, an incredible biodiversity is hidden - from hundred-year-old black pine forests, whose trees defy gravity on the steep cliffs, to numerous endemic species of plants and animals that have found a safe haven in this deep canyon. For all visitors, the Tara canyon is not only a geographical concept; it is a breath-taking experience, whether you watch it from one of the numerous viewpoints such as Ćurevac, or indulge in the adventure of rafting through its foaming beech trees. The Tara River, known for its crystal clear, emerald water that is drinkable throughout its course, is the heart of this ecosystem. Throughout history, the canyon has been difficult to access, allowing it to preserve its original wilderness and authenticity. Today, it represents a key part of the protected areas, including the Durmitor National Park which is under the protection of UNESCO, as well as the Piva Nature Park which borders its western parts.
