The canyon of the river Cijevna, which stretches through the territories of Podgorica and the municipality of Tuzi, is one of the most impressive geomorphological phenomena in Montenegro and is rightfully protected as a natural monument.
As the Cijevna River flows from Albania towards our plain, it creates a real spectacle in the limestone terrain, cutting deeply into the rocks and forming a canyon that in some places looks like it was cut by a knife blade. What makes this canyon special is its contrast - while the edges of the canyon on the surface are harsh, rocky and often bare, at the very bottom of the river Cijevna creates an ambiance that seems like something from a fairy tale. The water here is extremely clean, with a recognizable turquoise-green color, and over the centuries it has carved incredible shapes in the stone, including numerous whirlpools, straits and "cauldrons" that are a favorite place to cool off during hot summer days. Due to its proximity to the city, this area has for centuries been a place where the local population connected with nature, using its natural pools and the shade provided by the high cliffs of the canyon. On the ecological side, the Cijevna canyon is extremely rich and diverse. Due to the specific microclimatic situation, a large number of endemic and rare plant species that have adapted to life on steep rocks and in the wet environment of the river thrive here. Also, the canyon is an important habitat for various species of birds, especially those birds of prey that skillfully hide their nests in inaccessible rock crevices above the water. The course of the river itself is home to rich fish life, which further confirms that it is a healthy and preserved ecosystem. In addition to its natural beauty, the Cijevna canyon also has an important cultural and historical role for this region. Throughout the ages, Cijevna was a border, but also a source of life for the surrounding villages, and its canals and old bridges bear witness to how people throughout history built a coexistence with this wild river. Today, as a protected area, the Cijevna canyon requires careful management in order to prevent illegal construction and devastation of the area, thus preserving its authenticity. Visiting the canyon today offers a unique experience - the opportunity to escape from the city in just a few minutes' drive to an environment dominated by the sound of water, high rocks and nature that, despite the proximity of civilization, still retains its wild and untamed beauty.
