The canyon of the river Sušice, located in the northwestern part of the Durmitor National Park, represents one of the wildest and most interesting geomorphological phenomena in the Montenegrin mountain massif.
This canyon is specific for its "dried" nature, which is how it got its name, because the river Sušica often sinks during the summer months, leaving behind a stone bed that resembles a landscape from another world. With a depth that reaches up to 800 meters in some places, the canyon cuts like a deep scar into the massif of Durmitor, separating it from the mountain of the Piva plateau. Its sides are extremely steep and in some places inaccessible, covered with dense forests of conifers and deciduous trees that descend to the very bottom.
At the bottom of the canyon is Lake Sušičko, which is filled with water from melting snow and springs, and in the dry season it often disappears, giving way to green pastures. The canyon is an important habitat for chamois and bears, and its isolation makes it a real challenge for experienced hikers. The road to it leads through the beautiful areas of the villages of Durmitor, where visitors can feel the authentic mountain peace and hospitality of the local population. Unlike the Tara canyon, which captivates with its power and water, the Sušice canyon fascinates with its silence and the raw, pristine beauty of the karst. This is an area where nature does not change, but lives according to its laws, offering every intending traveler the opportunity to feel the true wilderness that stretches between the territories of the municipalities of Žabljak and Plužine, reminding us of the fragile but eternal balance between water, stone and forest.
