Throughout history, the area of today's municipality of Plužine has been a place where life took place between mountains and deep river valleys. Due to the difficult nature of the terrain and the important passages that led through it, people in the past built settlements in the valleys, and fortifications on the heights from which everything that was happening in the area could be monitored. This is how traces of medieval life were created that can still be associated with this region today. The old settlement of Plužine once stood on the site of today's Piva Lake. It was the main living area of this region before the dam was built on the Piva River in the middle of the 20th century and when the valley was flooded. In that old settlement, people lived in the valley, near the river and the roads that passed through this area. There was no fortress, but an ordinary living center where there were houses, estates and old roads that connected the surrounding villages. When the lake was created, the old valley disappeared under water, and the inhabitants were moved above the coast where the new town of Plužine was built. Thus, a completely new city was created, while the old one remained under the surface of the lake. Today, that space is no longer visible, but it represents an important part of the history of this region. Pivsko jezero and today's town remind us of the change that completely changed the appearance of the valley.
Soko city Soko grad is located above Šćepan Polje, at the point where Piva and Tara meet. It is located high on the rock, so it is not easy to get to, but you can see a large part of the surrounding area from it. It was created in the Middle Ages, at a time when this area was ruled by powerful families who controlled the roads and the territory between the mountains and rivers. This fortress was not only a place for defense, but also a point from which the region was managed. Its position made it possible to monitor the movement through the valleys and to keep control over the passages that were important for life and trade at that time. That is why the city of Soko had a special role in that period. Over time, it lost its function and became uninhabited. Today, only the remains of walls and stone foundations have been preserved, but the position still shows why it was built there. The view from that place leaves a strong impression because you can see the junction of two rivers and deep canyons that surround the fortress. The old settlement of Plužine under Pivski jezero and Soko town represent two important images of the past of this region. One testifies to the life that disappeared under the water, and the other to the medieval fortress that guarded the passages through the canyons. Together they show how nature and history shaped Plužine and left a legacy that still attracts visitors today
