Zeta River Nature Park

When we think of protected areas in Montenegro, we mostly think of harsh mountain peaks and dense forest complexes in the north. However, Rijeka Zeta Nature Park is something completely different – ​​it is the green and tame heart of the central part of the country. This spacious nature park is administratively and fraternally shared by the municipalities of Danilovgrad and Podgorica, and it was declared with the aim of protecting one of our most important, most sensitive and ecologically richest freshwater ecosystems from urbanization and pollution. In contrast to the wild mountain karst, here the landscape is dominated by the beautiful Bjelopavlić plain, through which the Zeta river meanders gently and elegantly, making picturesque meanders. The river is fed by numerous powerful springs and hot springs, and its valley, full of flooded meadows, reeds, backwaters and small marshes, creates a specific ambiance. Zeta is a real paradise for biodiversity - its warm and calm waters, together with the coastal belt, are home to an incredible number of plant and animal species. The river is widely known for its rich fish stocks, and a special place is occupied by the endemic brown trout (glavatica), which is a true symbol of this river course. In addition, this wetland is of global importance for ornithology, as it serves as a key resting place, feeding ground and shelter for thousands of migratory birds on their long journey across the Balkans. Dense coastal forests of willow, alder and poplar also provide shelter for numerous small mammals, amphibians and reptiles, making life in and around the river incredibly dynamic. But what gives this park a special value is the fact that the Zeta valley has been the center of life, culture and agriculture in this part of Montenegro for centuries. In the area that connects Danilovgrad and Podgorica, human history has left deep traces - from prehistoric and Roman sites, through medieval fortifications, all the way to old stone mills on the water and beautiful old bridges that bridge the Zeta even today. Today, this nature park strives to achieve a perfect balance between modern life and ecological preservation. The local population continues to practice traditional agriculture, animal husbandry and fruit growing on the fertile plain, and the river is a favorite place for local fishermen, hikers and kayakers.
