If you are looking for a place where nature has remained completely wild, harsh and untouched by modern life, then this nature park is the true embodiment of that. It is located in the northwest of Montenegro, entirely on the territory of the municipality of Savnik, and is located just below the southern slopes of the gigantic Durmitor. This area was placed under protection in order to preserve one of the last large, isolated ecosystems in our country, where dark forest depths and breathtaking abysses alternate in an incredible way. The main seal and the greatest value of this park is the Dragišnica rainforest. It is one of the few places in Europe where the human hand has never shaped the fate of the forest.
Beech, fir and spruce trees grow, age and die here without any human interference, creating a perfect natural balance. The trees are monumental, many are several centuries old, and the whole forest carpet looks completely mystical and untouched, like from old stories. Right next to the rainforest is the miraculous canyon of the Komarnica River. Komarnica literally cut through mountain massifs here, making deep rocky cuts, vertical cliffs and narrow passages. Its upper course is extremely dynamic, full of rapids, beeches and crystal clear, cold water fed by the Durmitor melts and hidden mountain springs. It is in this system of Komarnica that the famous Nevidio canyon is hidden - the last conquered canyon in Europe, which with its extreme inaccessibility best testifies to the wilderness of the Šavnica region. Due to its isolation and the fact that there are no major roads or industries, the park has become a safe haven for big game. The dense forests and inaccessible cliffs of the canyon are an ideal home for brown bears, wolves, wild boars and roe deer. On the highest and steepest rocks above Komarnica, chamois can be seen, while the entire area is rich in birds of prey and forest owls. The Komarnica River and its tributaries are, due to their incredible cleanliness and optimal temperature, the perfect habitat for the autochthonous brown trout. However, this park on the territory of the municipality of Šavnik is not only dry nature – it also preserves the story of people who have survived for centuries in these harsh conditions. Inside and on the outskirts of the park there are old, scattered villages and katuns, where people still live according to the rules that have been in force for centuries. The locals are engaged in traditional cattle breeding and agriculture, and their wooden houses and huts, made in the old-fashioned way, fit perfectly into this mountain landscape. A visit to Dragišnica and Komarnica is therefore a unique experience; You don't come here just to see the beautiful nature, but to feel the real, primordial peace, experience the incredible hospitality of the local highlanders and try the local food – from the famous Šavnik cheese and skorup, all the way to lamb and trout prepared in the traditional way.
