Piva Lake, located in the northwestern part of Montenegro, is one of the most impressive works of human hands in harmony with nature. Although it was created as a result of an engineering venture, the construction of the Mratinje dam on the Piva River, today it is impossible to observe it separately from the natural environment that surrounds it, because this lake is not only a reservoir of energy, but also a key carrier of the identity and development of the municipality of Plužine, which is proud of its untouched nature and highlander tradition.
The story of Piva Lake is inextricably linked to the construction of the hydroelectric power plant "Piva" in 1975, when, in order to create a 42-kilometer-long reservoir, it was necessary to flood the old settlement of Plužine, which was a historical cut that resulted in the creation of one of the deepest and most beautiful artificial lakes in Europe, while the new settlement built on a plateau above the water became the modern seat of the municipality. The lake is located at an altitude of about 675 meters, and due to the depth, which in some places reaches up to 200 meters, the water is extremely clear and cold throughout the year, with the color of the water varying from intense emerald green to deep turquoise, creating in contrast to the gray, steep cliffs of the canyon a landscape reminiscent of Nordic fjords. and all this surrounded by the massifs of Durmitor, Bioč, Volujak and Maglić. For the municipality of Plužine, the lake is the primary tourist attraction that offers kayaking, boating, fishing and organized excursion tours through the canyon during the summer months, while the fact that this area is part of the Piva Nature Park guarantees that the development of tourism is based on sustainability and the preservation of authentic rural life.
