The area of today's Andrijevica has a long and rich history of settlement that dates back to prehistoric times. This area played a particularly important role in the Middle Ages, when the valley of the Lim River served as a key trade and military route connecting the Adriatic coast and Zeta with the interior of the Balkans. Due to such a strategic position, fortifications, observation posts and fortified cities were erected on the surrounding hills, which controlled the roads and provided protection to the population. Although today mostly only archaeological traces remain, their historical value for understanding the past of Polimlje is immeasurable.
Medieval fortress Graz (Gradac) On the dominant hill of Graz, which rises directly above today's Andrijevica, there are the remains of an important prehistoric and medieval fortification. Due to its location, this place was a perfect natural observation deck with a clear view of the Lim valley and the directions that connected the northern and southern parts of the region. Archaeological research has confirmed that this area was continuously inhabited — from prehistoric times, through Roman times, to the Middle Ages. It is believed that the fort functioned as a fortified military station and a compact "city" for defense in times of crisis. Today, the remains of defensive walls and foundations are visible on the ground, and the site is attractive to visitors because it combines archaeological mysticism with a fantastic panoramic view of the entire Andrijevica basin. Medieval influence and connection with the wider Polim area Although there are no remains of large walled towns within the boundaries of today's municipality, the territory of Andrijevica in the Middle Ages was inextricably linked to the powerful centers in the wider Polimlje. This area gravitated towards the fortified town of Bihor and old Budimlje (near today's Berane), which were the administrative and religious centers of medieval rule. All of these fortifications were part of a unique defensive system along the Lim River. Due to frequent wars, turbulent historical turmoil and changes of government (from the Serbian medieval states, through the Ottoman Empire), these fortresses were demolished, burned and abandoned over time. By exploring these areas, history buffs can piece together a mosaic about the turbulent life, trade, and military strategies of medieval Polimlje. The old towns and fortifications in the Andrijevica area, and especially the mystical site of Graz, are priceless witnesses to the complex and layered past of this part of Montenegro. Although the ravages of time have not spared the high ramparts, the significance of these places lives on today through archaeological artifacts and the specific energy of the terrain itself. They offer modern explorers and tourists the perfect blend of historical exploration and enjoyment in the harsh but beautiful mountain ambience of the north.
