Piva Nature Park

This area was officially declared in 2015, which earned it the title of the first nature park (regional park) in Montenegro. Located in the extreme northwest of the country, in the territory of the municipality of Plužine, the park covers over 32,000 hectares and is a natural link between the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro and the Sutjeska National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was founded with the aim of permanently protecting the spectacular mountain massifs, deep river canyons and exceptional biodiversity of this part of the Dinaric Karst.

The topography of the park is dominated by the mountainous massifs of Bioč, Maglić and Volujak, whose harsh, exposed peaks rise over 2,000 meters above sea level. Opposite these craggy heights are the deeply cut and impressive canyons of the rivers Piva, Tara and Komarnica. A special gem of this protected area is its water resources. In addition to the artificial Lake Piva, which was created by the construction of the Mratinje dam and which, with its turquoise color and length of over 40 kilometers, curves through the former canyon, beautiful glacial lakes are hidden in the massifs of the mountains. Among them, the most famous is Trnovačko lake, unique in the world for its natural heart shape, located at the foot of Maglić, as well as Veliko and Malo Stabanjsko jezero. Due to the large height differences, the specific geographical position and the intertwining of climatic influences, the Piva Nature Park is characterized by an extremely rich flora and fauna. More than half of the park's territory is covered by dense, preserved forests of beech, fir and spruce, while numerous endemic and rare plant species grow on the steep canyon cliffs and mountain peaks. These vast forest and mountain complexes provide a stable habitat and safe haven for large mammals such as brown bear, wolf, chamois and roe deer, while clean, fast-flowing rivers and glacial lakes are rich in native brown trout. In addition to priceless ecological values, this region in the territory of the municipality of Plužine is also proud of its extremely rich cultural and historical heritage. The most significant cultural and historical monument is the famous Piva Monastery from the 16th century, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is specific in that during the construction of the hydroelectric power plant and the creation of the Piva Lake, it was completely moved, stone by stone, to a new, higher location, together with its priceless frescoes. The traditional way of life is still alive today in these areas through authentic village architecture and summer cattle ranches, where visitors can feel the spirit of the old times and enjoy the famous beer cheese (bellow cheese), homemade cream and traditional dishes of this region.
