On Žabljak, the cultural and tourist center of the Durmitor region, artistic facilities, natural exhibits and centuries-old historical heritage are available through several dedicated locations, cultural institutions, but also through fascinating sites in nature itself.
Natural History and Exhibition Spaces Durmitor National Park Natural History Collection: It is located in the administrative building of the National Park and represents an extraordinary window into the unique biodiversity of this region under the protection of UNESCO. The setting is carefully designed for visitors, explorers and nature lovers, and is divided into three key segments: Fauna exhibits: A rich collection containing skillfully prepared specimens of mammals, birds, insects and indigenous fish species that inhabit the forests of Durmitor, mountain peaks and deep canyons. Herbarium of Flora: A detailed display of the rich flora of Durmitor, which has over 1,300 plant species, including rare alpine plants and endemics specific exclusively to this massif. Geological and historical corner: An informative space that explains the formation of the fascinating Durmitor relief, glacial lakes (mountain eyes) and the grandiose canyon of the Tara River. Accompanying facilities: The complex has a modern projection hall with about 30 seats for broadcasting documentaries about the natural values of Montenegrin national parks, a souvenir shop with local handicrafts and authentic wool and wood products, as well as an information desk with trail maps and guides. Public institution Cultural Center Žabljak: Located in the very center of the city, this is the main hub of social and cultural life of the local community and tourists. Although some older records mention the art gallery at the Ski Center "Durmitor", this collection of paintings, graphics and sculptures does not actually exist in tourist facilities, but is fully integrated into this city Cultural Center, which is the only one that preserves a permanent exhibition of Montenegrin authors inspired by Durmitor. The institution also has a large multipurpose hall, and regularly organizes temporary exhibitions, literary evenings, guest appearances of regional theaters and educational workshops throughout the year. Art and history in the open air Medieval Stećak Tombstones – Open-Air Museums (UNESCO): The historical heritage of Žabljak is represented in the most beautiful way by the necropolis of tombstones (tombstones from the 14th and 15th centuries) at the sites of the Greek Cemetery in the village of Novakovići and Bare Žugić. These monumental stone monuments with mystical reliefs and decorations represent the supreme medieval art of carving and testify to the turbulent past and the old roads that led over the Durmitor plateaus. Festival "Wild Beauty Art" (WBA): Proof that art in Žabljak often comes out of closed walls. This international festival during July and August transforms Durmitor's landscapes, lake shores and mountain glades into a great open-air music and visual scene. A special cultural value of the festival is given by a specific Land Art program, recognizable by the creation of monumental pictograms and figures in the grass (such as motifs from the Durmitor tombstones and the mythical winged horse Jabučil, Duke Momčilo). This program represents a perfect, environmentally sustainable blend of nature, tradition and contemporary visual art.
