Hrid Lake, located high on the Prokletije mountain massif, at almost 2,000 meters above sea level, rightly bears the epithet of one of the most beautiful and mystical places in Montenegro. This jewel of the north is legally protected as a natural monument, and is popularly known as the "lake of happiness", because according to old legends, swimming in its waters brings health, happiness and longevity. When, after a long climb through dense coniferous forests, you finally emerge in front of the lake, it is clear why people have seen it as a sacred and magical place for centuries.
What makes Lake Hrid visually fascinating is its position in an "amphitheater" of steep, rocky peaks that surround it on all sides, as if jealously guarding it from the outside world. The water in the lake is incredibly clean, with a dark, almost dull color due to the reflection of the surrounding rocks and dense forests, which gives the whole landscape a note of seriousness and peace. During the year, the level of the lake varies a lot depending on the melting of snow and rains, so its surface and shape often change, giving it a different, almost unreal appearance each time. Ecologically speaking, Lake Hrid is a high mountain ecosystem that is extremely sensitive to change. The surroundings of the lake are made up of rare alpine meadows and dense forests of pine and spruce, which are a habitat for numerous plant and animal species adapted to the harsh mountain conditions. Here you can meet chamois, and the sky above the lake is often flown over by eagles, which only enhances the feeling of complete wildness and undiscovered. This entire area is part of the Prokletije National Park, but the status of a natural monument further emphasizes its uniqueness and the need to preserve it in its original, intact state. Historically and culturally, the lake was part of the everyday life of Plav herders, who drove their cattle to high mountain katuns nearby during the summer. For them, it was a source of water and a place of rest, and legends about it were passed down from generation to generation as part of the local identity. Today, Lake Hrid is a challenge for all hikers and nature lovers who want to escape from the crowds and experience true mountain silence. A visit to this site requires effort and effort, but the reward is priceless – the feeling of complete isolation, where in absolute peace, surrounded by eternal snow and clean mountain air, you can feel the true power of nature and its age-old beauty that defies time.
