In the embrace of the rugged and karst peaks of the Kučki Mountains, at an altitude of about 1448 meters, lies Lake Bukumir – one of the most beautiful examples of glacial heritage in Montenegro. Unlike the lakes in Prokletije, which are surrounded by coniferous forests, Bukumir Lake is characterized by a completely different environment, dominated by stone, pastures and tall grass, creating the impression of an area that belongs to another, long-forgotten time. Access to the lake is much easier than those on the high Prokletije, which makes it more accessible for day trips to nature lovers from Podgorica and the surrounding area, but despite good accessibility, Lake Bukumir has managed to preserve its original wilderness. The surroundings are adorned with katuns that come to life during the summer, offering a rare opportunity to feel the authentic spirit of mountain life in the immediate vicinity of the lake with a tasting of local products. The best time to visit is in late spring and summer, when the snow retreats from the surrounding peaks and the lake is fully open for exploration. Bukumir Lake represents the perfect harmony between accessible beauty and wild nature, reminding us that in the immediate vicinity of the urban center of the municipality of Podgorica, there are areas that offer an escape to the peace and quiet of the mountain heights.
